Sgt. Joseph D. Maietta (Giuseppe), 91 of Burlington, VT went to be with the Lord on July 14, 2021. He was born on December 16, 1929, in Burlington to Raffaele and Clementina (D’Augustino) Maietta. While growing up, Joe enjoyed spending time with his loving grandparents. He graduated from Burlington High School, class of ’48. Joe enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1953. He was a proud patriot and loved his country. He had deep respect for the flag and was quoted as saying “there isn’t anything more beautiful than our flag.”
On November 19, 1955, Joe married Bonnie (Viola Towne) at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Bonnie and Joe lived on Cross Parkway in Burlington where they raised their three kids, Todd, Tina, and Roxanne. They were married for 63 years.
Joe worked at IBM for 30 years as a graphic business forms designer. He served as the IBM club president. After his retirement, he worked at the Agway Nursery, VT Expos, and VT National Country Club.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Elks Lodge, and United States Marine Corps (USMC) League. Joe was very proud of growing up in “Little Italy” in Burlington and was a member of the Vermont Italian Cultural Association (VICA). He was a faithful and devoted member of Essex Alliance Church and served as an usher. Joe was an avid bowler, loved playing golf, bocce ball, cooking for friends and family, gardening, fishing, and relaxing by the pool with family. Later in life, Joe and Bonnie enjoyed many wonderful trips to Florida.
Joe is survived by his son, Todd Maietta, daughters Tina Maietta Mendes (Dean Mendes) and Roxanne Maietta (Marc Proteau). He also leaves behind his step granddaughter Shardae Mendes (Tony Muller); three sisters, Mary Giannone (Ralph), Elveta Brunelle (Donald), and Franny Lovejoy (Reggie) and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Bonnie, siblings, Betty Columbo (Frank), Frank Maietta (Josephine), Viola Dillion (James), Julia Greenaugh (Bernard), Ralph Maietta (Barbara), Patricia Maietta.
A celebration of his life will be held at Essex Alliance Church, 37 Old Stage Road, Essex Junction, VT on Monday July 19th at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, 455 North Avenue, Burlington, VT. All are welcome to a reception following the interment at the Elks Lodge Pavilion, 925 North Avenue, Burlington, VT.
