Sandra O. Hathaway, 84, of Colchester Vermont, formerly of Essex Junction, passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2022, with her loving family by her side. She was born on August 6, 1937 in Burlington, Vermont to Leon O'Neil and Etta (O,Neil) Hambly. Sandra graduated Essex High School in 1955. She married Stanley A. Hathaway on November 24, 1956. They were married for 63 years until Stanley's death on January 24, 2020.
Sandra opened her Essex Junction home as a daycare for many years, touching the lives of many children and their families. Sandra was a member of The Church of Latter Day Saints, where she researched her family genealogy and participated in bible study.
Sandra attended 13 different schools until her junior year of high school where she attended and graduated at Essex High School. As a younger woman, Sandra was an excellent athlete and was active in all activities with her children. Sandra excelled at most everything she did, especially knitting, crocheting, sewing, gardening, floral arranging, drawing, quilting, baking and cooking. She generously shared these gifts with her family. It was common to see Sandy walking in the village of Essex Junction,. First, as a young mother towing children in a red wagon, to her later years, carrying grocery bags to her West Street home.
Sandra had a warm and caring personality and she easily built a rapport with all who met her. Children were drawn to her and she found great pleasure in caring for all children. She ran a small daycare out of her home for many years. She left a strong and lasting impact on the children and families she cared for.
Sandra was a caring and considerate person. She was also honest, assertive, with a strong sense of fairness. She raised her children with these same values.
It would be amiss to not mention her great love of her husband, Stanley Hathaway. They shared a great love and respect for each other which grew stronger over their 63 years together. Stan and Sandy provided an excellent example to their children on how to build a beautiful, life-long marriage with mutual respect and care.
Sandy spent her last few years under the excellent care at Green Mountain Nursing and Rehab Center of Colchester. Her husband, Stan and her mother, Etta were both former residents of Green Mountain Nursing and Rehab. The staff's expertise and flowing compassion is unmatched. The Hathaway family are forever grateful for their impeccable care of Stan and Sandra.
Left behind to cherish Sandy's memory are her 6 children: Kim Goulette, of Essex Junction, Bonnie VanSchijndel and her husband Ken of Irvine, CA, Scott Hathaway of Burlington VT, Tracy FitzGerald of Ira, VT, Karen Hathaway of St Albans, VT, Belinda Hathaway Hull and her wife Colleen Hull of South Dakota. Her sister, Brenda Brill of CT, 8 grandchildren; Adrienne, Alanna, Daniel, Mark, Macy, Caleb, Amber, Hannah, 10 great grandchildren; Waverly, Mark, Izzy, Carter, Landon, Cooper, Lilah, Charlotte, Carter, Kayleigh.
