Ruth Ordway Copp
Our family is sad to share the passing of our beloved mother, Ruth Ordway Copp, who passed on Saturday April 16, 2022. She had been in declining health for several months while living at the Residence at Shelburne Bay.
Ruth was born in Burlington, Vermont on April 27, 1924 to her late parents, George A. Ordway and Esther Anderson Ordway.
She attended Burlington schools and graduated from BHS, class of ‘42. Ruth went on to graduate from Syracuse University ‘46, where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority.
After college she returned to Burlington and married her high school and Syracuse soul mate, Stillman V. Copp. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage until Stillman’s passing on July 9, 2016. Together they raised five children in Burlington.
Mom and Dad enjoyed many Saturday nights playing bridge with their dear friends, Betty and Herb Bahrenburg, and cribbage games with Bill and Peggy Logan. Over the years they took several trips to Europe with the Logans and their church group.
Ruth was an active stay at home mom until her youngest daughter was in middle school, and she took a job working in women’s fashions at Sears, where she worked for several years. She was an avid reader and instilled the love of books to her children.
Ruth was a member of the First Church of Burlington and the Congregational Church in Naples, Florida where she and Stillman spent their winters. Together they enjoyed performing in their Naples community musicals.
She was a past president of Chapter B, PEO.
Ruth is survived by her children: Candace Fredette (Don), Charles Copp, Catherine Dion, Carey Turnbaugh and Christen Gleason (Peter). In addition, she leaves her 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Family members who predeceased her are: Stillman, Charles and Barbara Ordway, Robert and Ruth Copp, and her sons-in-law, Robert Turnbaugh and Dan Dion.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Residence at Shelburne Bay, their nursing staff, Bayada hospice care and Mom’s special friend, Leona, as well as Dr. Northrup and especially Dr. Samuel Stoyak.
