Paul B. Thornton

Paul B. Thornton of Essex Junction, age 89, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 10, 2021, at the University of Vermont Medical Center surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. He lived a full life, a good life and will be missed by many.

Mr. Thornton was born on August 22,1931, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He would eventually settle in Vermont where he would meet the love of his life Elaine Roberts.

Paul and Elaine married at the Rutland Baptist Church on November 26, 1960.

Paul worked many years for Maislin Transport, Canada’s largest transport company, out of their Williston, VT terminal. His career included a combination of long-distance hauling as well as local. He was the last remaining employee still with Maislin when the company closed down in the mid 1980’s. He then switched careers working in Facilities Services at Shelburne Community School and Westford Elementary School. He also drove a school bus for the South Burlington School district. Later in life, he became an installer for Lifeline.

Paul led a life of service; he was a longtime member of the Shriners organization in Burlington as well as being a Mason. He was also a member of the Good Samaritans at Fanny Allen Hospital where he volunteered his time until his passing. Paul was an active member of the United Church of Colchester.

His hobbies included traveling the backroads of Vermont and New England with his wife, working on puzzles, playing bingo at the Essex Senior Center, watching sports and movies, and spending time with family and friends.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years Elaine R. Thornton , devoted son Richard P. Thornton and his wife, Judy McGrail Thornton of Arlington, MA; brother -in -law Lowell E. Roberts ; sister-in-law Gail R. Bongavene and her husband William; Uncle of Mark R. Thornton and his wife, Robbin of Omaha, NE, Shane A. Thornton and his wife Lisa of Middletown Springs, VT, Lance P. Thornton and his wife Charlotte of Simpsonville, SC, Mary Beth Chartrand and her husband Dan of Brandon, VT, Todd A. Thornton and his wife Tina of Forest Dale, VT and Jason L. Roberts of Rutland, VT.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents Byron I. and Adrienne (Belanger) Thornton, and brother S. Ray Thornton.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at 1:00pm at The United Church of Colchester, 900 Main Street, Colchester, VT. Pastor Russell Willis, will officiate.
