Oliver Lawrence Howard, 92 of Burlington, Vermont, passed away December 14, 2021 surrounded by his family, after a long and full life.
Oliver was born on December 27, 1928 in Burlington to Oliver Henry and Helen Sibley Howard.
After graduating from Burlington High School, class of 1947 he went to work with his father for Lorenzo Howe at the Howe Farm in Burlington. Oliver married classmate Marian Rebecca Mooney September 9, 1950. They built their home on Moore Court in 1965.
Oliver worked in several different professions throughout his life. He started driving tractor trailer for Sun Oil in 1956. He found his passion with cars while working at Brewer Motors in 1967, continuing at South Burlington Chrysler-Plymouth and Yandow Motors. In 1975 he opened his own gas station and used car lot, Howard’s Motor Mart, in Essex Junction. He could often be seen driving his 1979 Dodge Li’l Red Express Truck around town. After selling his business, he worked at Bayview Cadillac until he decided to retire permanently. He and his wife enjoyed several years of quality time babysitting their young grandchildren before her passing in 1999.
In addition to his passion for cars was his passion for dogs. There was always a dog by his side growing up and as an adult, boxer dogs had his heart. He was an active member of the Champlain Valley Kennel Club serving a few years as Vice President with Marian as secretary. Oliver was exceptionally proud of the obedience training he did with his award winning boxers.
Oliver was never happier than when his family was around him. He had a contagious smile and laugh that he shared with everyone. He would get his kids up at the crack of dawn to go to Ethan Allen Park to help train his dogs; he gave both Reg and Nancy jobs at his business, Reg in the garage, Nancy in the office doing his bookkeeping.
Oliver was an active lifetime member of BPOE #916 where he met his future wife Marion Beaulieu. They were married on June 1, 2002. Oliver and Marion enjoyed attending functions at the Elks Lodge, taking bus trips and traveling.
He was predeceased by his parents Oliver H. and Helen S. Howard, first wife Marian Mooney Howard and brother Marvin Coleman. He is survived by his loving family, wife Marion Beaulieu Howard, son Reginald and his wife Deborah Howard, daughter Nancy Howard and Joe Brochu. Grandchildren Daniel, Eric and Kristen Gokey, Travis and wife Deanna Capponi, great-grandchildren Bryson and Grace Gokey, step-children Joanne Chung, Edmund and Debra Beaulieu, Paul and Sherry Beaulieu. Step-Grandchildren Kira Chung, Jessica Chung, Matthew and Leigh Chung, Christopher and Holly Chung, Justin Beaulieu, Crystal Beaulieu, Daryk Beaulieu, Kayleigh Beaulieu. Step-Great-Grandchildren Kieran Chung, Elliana Chung, Natalee Beaulieu, Paizlea Entrekin, Brooke Beaulieu.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at Lakeview Cemetery, Burlington, Vermont.
The family would like to send a special thanks to the Hospice team who made his final transition peaceful. Oliver always looked forward to the caring and gentle visits with Haley Duquette, Kelly Ploof and Kelly Duval.
