On Saturday March 26, Jules Pequignot, 102.99, passed away at The Converse Home.
Jules was born March 27, 1919 in Winstead, CT, the son of Louis and Elizabeth Pequignot.
Jules graduated from Torrington High School and went on to graduate from St. Michael’s College in 1942. In 1988 he was inducted into the St. Michaels Athletic Hall of Fame which was always a very proud and special moment for him.
Jules began his career as a teacher and basketball coach at MSJ in Rutland before moving back to Burlington where he continued teaching and coaching for a couple of years at Cathedral High School (Rice Memorial). He later went to work for Nationwide Insurance until he retired in 1983.
In 1943 a then young basketball coach went on a blind date with Doris Plankey who worked at the Burlington Free Press. Jules married Doris on June 29, 1946 and until March 14, 2020 when Doris passed, they had never been apart.
Jules loved basketball and his St. Michael’s family. He attended most home games until Covid hit which kept him out of the gym. Jules was also an avid golfer, with three hole-in ones and shooting his age in three different decades. As children we didn’t think our Dad worked because he was at the Burlington Country Club golfing every day. Turns out he could do both. His other passions included telling jokes, going to coffee club with the “boys” and simply spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most of all he loved his wife and we’re sure he was happy to reunite with her just in time to watch Duke play North Carolina.
He leaves behind three sons Michael Pequignot and his wife Mary, John Pequignot and his wife Bonnie, Jimmy Pequignot and his wife Debbie and one daughter Carol Smith and her husband Bill. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Rebecca, Sara, Courtney, Ryan, Ashley, Molly and Taylor and great grandchildren Brian, Lexi, Khanen, Jeffrey, Jacob, Landon, Lincoln, Ashton, Brendan and Luca.
He also leaves behind a sister-in-law, Peg Miller of South Burlington and his Converse Home family. There are too many to name, but you were all very kind and caring to our Dad and we thank you.
Jules was predeceased by his sister Vera Convard and her husband Gene Convard, his brother Louis Pequignot and his wife Evelyn Pequignot, his brother in-law Ken Miller, his sister-in-law Cecile (Sis) Kaigle and her husband George Kaigle, daughter-in-law Brenda Pequignot and a granddaughter Kristen Pequignot.
His family will remember his sense of humor and his athletic talents. He was truly a sweet great man. Please enjoy a moment of joyful silence for his life and pass on his quiet good works anonymously to someone. In honor of his memory, please give a friend a hug, share a silly joke or write a note of gratitude to someone who may not know how much they have meant to you.
Services will follow at a later date.
