So. Burlington, VT
It is with great sadness that the family of Christina DesLauriers Smullen announce her passing on December 17, 2020 at her home in South Burlington. She was surrounded by loved ones, following a courageous four-year battle with cancer.
Christina was born on February 6,1957 in Burlington, Vermont, the first child of Ralph R. DesLauriers and Ruth B. DesLauriers. Christina, or "Chris," stood out amongst all who knew her for her huge heart and quick wit. She often had one-liners so funny that those around her could not help but erupt in laughter. Chris was dedicated, purposeful in her actions and words, loving, relentlessly caring, and generous of heart to many.
Her favorite childhood pastimes included riding and caring for her beloved horse Chico, hitting the slopes at her family's ski resort Bolton Valley, and visiting the beautiful beaches of Mexico. Chris attended Sacred Heart Middle School in Guadalajara, Mexico, South Burlington High School and went on to become a straight-A student at Castleton State College. A lover of learning and experiencing different cultures, Chris traveled across Europe in her college years. Skiing in the Swiss Alps, swimming in the Dead Sea, and trekking across the deserts of Turkey were among her many adventures. She treasured these special memories and spoke of them often.
On one particularly special summer day in her early twenties, Chris met the love of her life, Jimmy, while working the Ice House staff party at Quarry Hill Club. A whirlwind romance ensued and two weeks later they were engaged! Within six months, on December 4, 1982, they were married on a record breaking 60 degree Vermont day, and twenty-nine wonderful years of marriage ensued. In 1986, Chris and Jimmy purchased the Ice House Restaurant and successfully worked alongside one another for twenty-five years.
Chris and Jim's two children, Austin and Jaclyn, were the ultimate joy of Chris' life and were the steadfast recipients of her selfless and compassionate devotion. She would have, and did, do anything for them, and they are eternally grateful for her boundless love. The fulfillment Chris received from being a mom to Austin and Jaclyn only grew as she watched them both begin to create families of their own, which in turn, made her a grandmother.
Chris' caring nature was bestowed upon many. She had the wonderful quality of making one, and the moment, feel important. She would regularly take the time to converse with those she loved and made the most out of every day. We will greatly miss those special moments with her.
Christina was predeceased by her husband, James Smullen in 2011, and her parents-in-law, Richard and Rosemary Smullen in 2018. She will be forever lovingly remembered by her son Austin Smullen, wife Tess and grandson Brayden; her daughter Jaclyn Shea, husband Dan and granddaughter Emersyn; her parents Ralph R. DesLauriers and Ruth B. DesLauriers; her siblings Ruth DeCesare, Edward DesLauriers, and Ralph E. DesLauriers; and her large extended family consisting of her siblings-in-law and five DesLauriers half-siblings. Chris also leaves behind nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins in both the US and Mexico, as well as close friends whom she greatly cherished and who cherished her.
A memorial service for Christina Smullen, who passed away December 17, 2020, has been scheduled for Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 11:00 am, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 305 Flynn Avenue, Burlington, VT.
