Barbara Walter-Auch (1957-2021)

Barbara “Barb” Walter-Auch, age 64, of Essex Junction, Vermont died peacefully at home on May 16, 2021. Barb was the loving wife of William “Bill” Auch, whom she married in 1982. She was born in 1957 on Long Island in Huntington Station, New York and was the daughter of the late Hans and Hannelore Walter.
In 1975 Barb attended SUNY Oswego where she met the love of her life, Bill. She subsequently transferred to Kutztown University, earning a degree in Special Education For The Visually Impaired. Upon graduation in 1980, Barb was an itinerary teacher in Colorado Springs, Colorado teaching the visually impaired. Soon thereafter she relocated to Burlington, Vermont and taught at Howard Mental Health Residential Home in St. Albans, VT. She then became a special educator at Harwood Union High School for several years. In 1988 Barb joined the Essex Junction school district initially as a special educator and then as a 5th grade teacher until her retirement in 2020.
Barb had a passion for educating her students and herself throughout her life. She graduated with a Master of Education from Saint Michael’s College in 1986 and continued to further her education taking various programs including those at Columbia University.
With her husband, Barb lived and raised her family in Essex Junction. In addition to enjoying her many friends, Barb loved to travel. Some of her favorite destinations were various Caribbean Islands. In recent years, she and Bill traveled many times to Sedona, Arizona where she enjoyed hiking the rock monuments, especially Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock. Her passions also included gardening and cooking, and she was an avid reader.
Most of all, Barb will be best remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother “Oma.” In addition to her husband, she leaves behind her children, Eliza (Auch) Coy and her husband Jeremy (Connecticut), Tucker Auch (Vermont), along with her granddaughter, Lucy Coy with another on the way. Her granddaughter Lucy was the light of her life. In addition, she is survived by her sister Nancy Walter and brother Kenneth Walter. She was predeceased by her sister Christal Smith.
