Ruth H. ‘Packy’ Jones of Shelburne VT, formerly of Walton, NY, passed away on Saturday October 19,
2019 at age 99. She was born in Portland ME on August 1, 1920 to Reverend J. Roy and Esther (Wadsworth) Packard. Ruth graduated from Middlebury College in 1941 and received a master’s degree from Simmons School of Social Work in 1943. Ruth was married to Dr. Charles Jones. They lived in Burlington, VT, then moved with their growing family to Norwood, then Weston, MA for several years, finally settling in Walton, NY with their 6 children in 1962. There Ruth was active in the community, volunteering in the school, the United Presbyterian Church, and Planned Parenthood. Many local children learned to swim from Ruth over her 25 years as the waterfront director at 4-H Camp Shankitunk.
In retirement, she and Charlie loved traveling in their RV across the country. She also enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, snowshoeing and gardening, but what she loved most was spending time with her family. Her last years were spent at Wake Robin Retirement Community, Shelburne, VT, where she renewed old friendships with college classmates and made many new friends, as well. We wish to thank the staff there who cared for her so well and with such TLC especially her last couple of years. She is survived by her children, Susan Brown of Essex Junction VT, Hope Olmstead (Bruce Boutet) of Monmouth ME, Martha Jones (Paul Zerella) ) of Santa Clarita CA, Stephen Jones (Debbie) of Frederick MD, Matthew Jones (Karen) of Charlottesville VA and Kathryn Monk (John) of York PA. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Ruth will be remembered for her sense of humor, her independent spirit, and her genuine caring for everyone.
A circle of remembrance will be held at Wake Robin on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 2:00pm. A Celebration of Life service will be held in the United Presbyterian Church in Walton, NY on April 25, 2020 at 10:00am.
