Rudolf Laimonis Hirss

- - Rudolf Laimonis Hirss died on April 26, 2018 at the age of 92. He was born in Riga, Latvia on January 4, 1926. He immigrated to the USA with his parents and siblings after leaving Latvia under death threats for the entire family. 

Rudy, as he was known to all, joined the U.S. Army and became a naturalized citizen. He was deployed to the European and then the Pacific theaters during WWII. Rudy was very proud of the United States Flag. After the war, he attended several colleges and then went to work for his father in his textile manufacturing factory. He pursued other careers including working for Alma Realty Co, Allenwood Inn, G.E., ESSO, Champlain College, Giroux Screen Printing, which he later owned, and the Burlington School Department. He was a skilled skier, soccer player, ice skater, swimmer and tennis player. He coached many young people in skiing and soccer. He also was a volunteer fire fighter earning the rank of chief for the volunteer force and commission for the Burlington Fire Department. Rudy always had BIG dreams but as his sister-in-law said he was always "tilting at windmills."

Rudy is survived by four children, daughter, Carroll Sager of Hagerstown, MD; son, Robert Hirss of Fairfax VT; daughter, Ann Kalinoski of Burlington, VT; and son, Paul Hirss of Concord NC.; brother, Andris Hirss of Washington state; sister-in-law, Holly Bowers Hirss; son-in-law, Greg Kalinoski; daughter-in-law, Kelly Hirss; six grandchildren, Rebecca Sager, Rudy Hirss, Elizabeth Dattilio, Christopher Kalinoski, Eliza Kalinoski, and Holly Mashaw; 3 great grandchildren, Sophia and Rachel Dattilio and Jayden Mashaw. 

Rudy was predeceased by his wife, Louise Carroll Hirss; by his granddaughter, Bailey Ann Hirss; by his parents, Alma and Roberts Hirss; and by his brother, Ivars Hirss. 

The Family would like to thank his dear friends from Fletcher Place and the Residence for all the friendship and love given to him over the years.

Services will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington on May 22, 2018 at 1:00. Internment of his ashes will be done at the family's convenience.
