Robert Edward Hams passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Bob was born August 20, 1922, in Crown Point, NY, the son of Harry and Winifred Hams. He attended public schools in Crown Point and after graduation joined the GE Apprentice Program in Schenectady, NY. After completion of his apprenticeship, he joined the US Navy where he became an Aviation Electronics Technician, servicing electronic gear on the Navy's carrier-based fighter planes during World War II. He received an honorable discharge in June 1946.Bob returned to GE Schenectady, NY in 1950. In 1959, he transferred to the GE Burlington Plant and retired in February 1983 as a Manufacturing Planner. He married Irene Smith Mangum August 24, 1963 at the First United Methodist Church in Burlington. After retirement, Bob and his wife Irene, spent 6 months of the year at their home in New Port Richey, FL, and the summer months at their home in Vermont. They enjoyed camping in their motor home at various campgrounds around New England. They also enjoyed traveling and went on tours to Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Branson, MO, plus several cruises to the Caribbean as well as several bus tours to various places. Bob's hobbies included deer hunting, bowling, snowmobiling, ballroom dancing, golf, and playing cards with family and friends. He is survived by his step-daughter Nancy Mangum of South Burlington, VT, a special cousin George Barnet of Plattsburg, NY, Irene's sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Leonard Mercia of Essex Junction, VT, Irene's brother and sister-in-law Robert and Mary Smith of Brunswick, ME, Irene's brother Willard Smith of Burlington, VT and Irene's sister Dorothy Quaglietti of Pittsfield, MA, and sister-in-law Rita Smith of Burlington, VT. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Irene, his step-daughter Sheila, brother and sister-in-law Raymond and Betty Hams of Ticonderoga, NY, and brother-in-law Kenneth Smith of Burlington. The family wishes to thank the staff at the University of Vermont Medical Center and the staff at Gazebo Apartments at Pillsbury Manor for taking such wonderful care of Bob. A Memorial Service will be held at Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant Street, Essex Junction, VT on Sunday, May 7 at 4pm
