Joyce B. Daniels, (1917-2018)
Joyce Bates Daniels, of Essex Junction, VT passed away surrounded by loved ones on March 11th, 2018. Joyce was born in Rutland, VT on November 7, 1917 to Anna and Douglas Bates. She grew up in Pittsford, VT and graduated from Pittsford High School in 1935. Joyce earned a psychology degree from the University of Vermont in 1939 and attended Rutland Business College from 1939-1941.
In 1966, Joyce married the love of her life, John C. Daniels, and made Essex Junction her home. Joyce spent 38 years working for the State of Vermont and devoted her career to helping others. Joyce began her public service career in 1941 as a secretary at the Rutland District Office of Probation and Parole. A year later, she transitioned into a social work role, serving the communities of Rutland, St. Johnsbury and Burlington during her tenure in the department. Her last position before her retirement in 1979 was at the Burlington district office of VT Social Welfare and Social and Rehabilitative Services.
Joyce was a dedicated member of the First Congregational Church in Essex Junction and participated in a number of volunteer efforts to support the church. Her tremendous interest in the outdoors, specifically birding, inspired Joyce to become a founding member of the Green Mountain Audubon Society. With a tremendous love of life, Joyce filled her days with various hobbies: canoeing, hiking, archaeology, studying Vermont history, and playing piano. In her later years, Joyce appreciated the company of her beloved cat, Buddy, and the caring community members and service providers that made it possible for her to live comfortably in her home.
Joyce is survived by her nephew, James Lilly, of Weybridge, VT. She was predeceased by her husband, John Daniels (1993); mother Anna (Manley) Bates (at the age of 96) and her father, Douglas Bates (at the age of 97).
Her family would like to thank the many community members and providers for their dedicated and compassionate care for Joyce over the years including: Visiting Nurse Association, HomeShare Vermont, Home Care Assistance, VNA Hospice, First Congregational Church in Essex Junction and Essex Meals on Wheels
