Willis Albert Spaulding
Essex Junction - Willis Albert Spaulding passed away 9 March 2018 at his home.He was born June 8, 1924 in Proctorsville, VT to Flora Williams and James Spaulding. He graduated from Springfield High School in the class of 1942, and following graduation enlisted in the Navy. He served aboard a submarine, the USS Spikefish in the Pacific theatre in World War II. He married the former Shirley Anne Gray in the Proctorsville St. James Methodist Church September 26, 1946. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Burlington.
Mr. Spaulding graduated from the University of Vermont with the class of 1950, and went on to receive his Masters Degree in Education from there in 1963. Willis retired from Burlington High School in 1984, after teaching for 34 years in the areas of Vocational and Industrial Arts and Drivers Education. For over 30 years he and his wife operated the Burlington Auto School, giving private driving lessons in the Burlington area. Willis was also a member of the US Army Reserve, retiring in 1980 after 37 years of service, at the rank of Colonel.
He maintained memberships in various associations, including Ethan Allen Lodge # 72, Valley of Burlington Scottish Rite, Mt. Sinai #3 Shrine, American Legion Post #1, Sub Vets of WW2, Vermont Automobile Enthusiasts (past president), Antique Auto Club of America, Reserve Officers Association, Retired Officers, VT Beneficiaries Association (member of Board of Directors), AARP, VFW Post # 6689 and the National Council of Senior Citizens. He was very interested in antique cars and their club activities and was a founding member of the Antique Studebakers Club. In addition to his numerous club associations, he particularly enjoyed traveling, fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife Shirley of 71 years and three daughters. He was especially proud of his children and grandchildren, and leaves the following survivors: Ruth and husband William Rivers of Little River; SC; Suzanne and her husband Charles Schuffert of Scotia, NY; and Eileen Spaulding and her husband Ron Whitten of Essex Junction. His family also includes Curt Randall and his wife Maura of Milton. He leaves his grandchildren: Julie Barrer and Stacey Lantas; Christopher Schuffert; Evan and Nicholas Lacasse, and Jennifer Ready and Matthew Spaulding. He leaves great grandchildren Will and Max Barrer and Eleanor Ready. He was predeceased by his daughter Margaret Lacasse and her husband Ricky, and his parents and several cousins.
Willis will be remembered and sorely missed by his family and friends for his generosity of spirit and his dry Vermont sense of humor. Donations may be made in his memory, in lieu of flowers, to the Essex Rescue or Shrine Hospitals.
Calling hours will be Saturday Morning 3/24/18 10:00 AM at Corbin and Palmer in Essex Junction. A memorial service will be held immediately following visiting hours at 11:00 AM at the same location.
