Ruth S. Stokes (1942 – 2017)
Ruth S. Stokes of Cape Coral, FL and Williston, VT, passed away Monday, October 16, 2017 at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington, VT.
Ruth was born in Newark, NJ, January 19, 1942 to Hyman and Dorothy (Brown) Shapiro. After receiving her B.A. from Douglass College in New Brunswick, NJ, Ruth taught in the Metuchen, NJ school system before moving to Philadelphia, PA where she was a social worker.
She married Jon A. Stokes on June 26, 1964. They moved to Vermont in 1969 where Jon opened a veterinary practice, Green Mountain Animal Hospital, in South Burlington. They moved to Williston in 1972. They recently became Florida residents after the purchase of a home in Cape Coral, FL.
Ruth was a dedicated public servant and was highly respected by her peers across the State. She was a member of the Williston School Board, Williston Board of Civil Authority, Vermont State Representative serving many years on the Judiciary Committee, and Williston Justice of the Peace. Additionally, she was Burlington City Clerk, served as Executive Director of the Vermont Republican Party, served as the executive director of the Vermont Student Opportunities Scholarship Fund and served on the UVM Board of Trustees. Ruth was an avid bridge player and was a long-time member of the Burlington Bridge Academy.
Ruth was predeceased by her sister, Helen S. Sopko of Monroe Twp., New Jersey and her parents,
Surviving Ruth are her husband Jon, daughter Nanci of East Rutherford, NJ and son Robert and his wife, Tracey of Williston, VT, grandson Trevor, granddaughter Hailey and brother-in-law, David Sopko of Monroe Twp., NJ.

A memorial service will follow a private graveside internment. The service will be held at Corbin & Palmer Funeral Services, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Jct., VT who are assisting with arrangements on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.
