Richard "Dick" Weed
Charlotte - Richard "Dick" Lowrey Weed, 80, of Charlotte, passed away on December 17, 2017 at The VNA Respite House in Colchester, VT. Dick was born on September 21, 1937 in New Haven, CT to Clifton and Dorothy Carpenter Weed and predeceased by beloved brother Clifton Weed in 1947.
Dick attended Northfield Mount Hermon School class of 1955. He had the distinction of winning the Bemis-Forslund Pie Race, the oldest road race in the United States, in his senior year. After NMH, Dick attended Duke University where he excelled in debate and won the Dixie Classic Trophy.
He married Joan Frances Northrop in 1959 and raised their family in Branford, Connecticut. Dick was the first theater reviewer for Long Wharf Theater in New Haven, CT. He was a long-time member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, an avid sailor, singer, philanthropist and arts enthusiast. He was elected to the Branford Representative Town Meeting in 1963. His generosity extended to donating a kidney to his daughter Julie.
Joan and Dick moved to Charlotte, VT in 1996. They were active in the Middlebury Congregational Church and then the welcoming community of the Charlotte Congregational Church, as well as the Charlotte Senior Center. They also enjoyed seeing the world together and traveled to six continents in their retirement years.
Dick leaves three children, Julie Weed of Branford, CT, Janet Breen and husband Kevin of Burlington, VT, and Geoffrey Weed and wife Dianna of Chicago, Illinois as well as six loving grandchildren: Hannah, Molly and Jack Breen, and Franny, Georgia and Lilah Weed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to COTS, 94 North Avenue, Burlington, VT 05401 or the Music Fund of the Charlotte Congregational Church, 403 Church Hill Road, Charlotte, VT 05445.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the Charlotte Congregational Church, Friday, December 22, 2017 at 3:00pm.
