John L Bartlett

Age: 82 • Essex Junction

John L Bartlett passed away at McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester, VT on Friday evening, Nov 3rd after a 9 year battle with lung disease.

John was born in Norwich, New York on June 22, 1935, the son of John Wesley Bartlett and Helen Marie Salisbury. John left high school to enlist in the US Air Force as a cook, but after scoring well on his aptitude test was recruited as a jet mechanic. He met the love of his life, Nancy Rae Nichols while stationed at Fort Ethan Allen in Colchester, Vermont. They were married 4 months later, as they both were certain they were destined to be together. Their first daughter, Cathy Rae, was born 11 months later. After their second child, Shawn Lee, was born in November 1958, they were transferred to Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota.

John left the Air Force in 1961 and began his career with IBM at the Fishkill, New York Plant. His third child, Lisa Sue, was born in 1963.

John transferred to the Essex Junction IBM plant several years later in the best interest of his family. During his time at IBM, he became a computer analyst and later moved into management. He retired From IBM in 1990. He then became a part-time realtor and worked closely with his friend, Gary Schoolcraft, for many years. At this time, John also obtained his captain's license.

John believed in community service and involvement, and his actions reflected this. He served in the Boy Scouts as a leader and commissioner, was on the town select board, zoning board, planning board, hazardous waste commission, and was a Justice of the Peace. He was also active in the United Way and Special Olympics. In John's later years he was often heard saying, "I want to be around as long as I am helpful to others".

John was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt. He fished with his family and his fishing buddy and best friend, Paul Brusso, for many years. His son Shawn, shared his love of fishing and was his first mate on most of these excursions. His other passion on the water was duck hunting.

John loved the water and the family spent every Sunday at the Sandbar swimming, boating, and fishing. John and his family also spent time on the water at Nancy's family's camps on Everest Shore in Milton. The water was where he relaxed and. found peace. He enjoyed watching the sun break over the water and the sounds of the waves breaking on the shore. In later years, he became a charter captain on his fishing boat, "The Bottom Line".

Another of John's passion was working on cars and racing at dirt tracks with his brother, Jerry. John's family shared his enthusiasm for racing and followed the Northern Nascar circuit. Catamount Stadium was a routine Saturday night outing for the Bartletts.

John was predeceased by his brother, Jerry and his sister, Mary Lou.

John is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Nancy Rae Bartlett, his 3 children: Cathy Hickory, Shawn Bartlett, and Lisa Goodwin and her husband Jeff. He is survived by 10 grandchildren: Ryan, Adam, Ben, Morgan, Travis, Nicholas, Hailee, Christopher, Megan, and Justin and one great grand child, Shiloh. He is also survived by his dog/beast of a companion, Mcgraw.

The family would like to thank and acknowledge his wonderful team of providers for the care, compassion, and attention who comforted and supported us all throughout his battle.
