Essex Junction - Joan Margaret Thompson, age 67, passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2017, at UVM Hospital, with her son by her side. She was born July 19, 1950, in Bronx, New York to Bernhardt and Margaret Thompson. She married Antonio de Souza e Silva on March 3rd, 1973 at St Patrick's Cathedral in New York. Joan began a long career as an internationally recognized fashion model at the age of 15, gracing the covers of many publications such as Vogue, ELLE, Glamour, Mademoiselle, and Seventeen. Upon moving to Vermont in 2005, Joan continued her work in fashion through retail where she made many close friends throughout the region. Joan travelled the world having lived in Brazil for almost 30 years as well as Canada, Paraguay and Libya, living her life to the fullest whether soaking in the sun riding horses or skiing North American mountains. Joan had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. She loved helping others and she loved animals, having especially cared for her two cocker spaniels, her German shepherd Lulu, and her horse, Tche. She is predeceased by her brother Roy and survived by her husband, Henrique; her brother Eugene, her son, Bernardo Antonio; her six beloved nieces and one nephew, as well as her close friends scattered throughout our planet. Those whose lives Joan touched are invited to Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home in Essex Junction from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, to reminisce, grieve, support each other and, of course, celebrate her life with some special words from Father Tim at 5:30 p.m.
