Donald Charles Phelps

Age: 72 * Shelburne

Donald Charles Phelps passed away at home on April 26, 2017 with his loving wife of 44 years by his side.  He was born in Burlington, Vermont on April 2, 1945, the son of the late Charles and Lucille (Forcier) Phelps.

Don graduated from Rice Memorial High School in 1963 and then joined the Navy.  He served two tours of duty in Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart for his heroism.

After returning from the war, he married Mary Jane Jerome on December 15, 1973.  He worked as a lineman for the New England Telephone Company for 35 years.  During this time, the family lived in Westfield, VT and in Bennington, VT.  Upon retirement, he relocated to Shelburne and enjoyed quality time with his beloved family.  Don simply loved life at home – sharing the days with Mary, playing with the grandchildren, spending time on the patio and puttering around in his oversized garage.  He never had to travel to find happiness.

Don is survived by his wife Mary, his son Gary Phelps and his wife Lisa of San Diego, CA, his daughter Tina Phelps Sordiff and her husband Bobby of Shelburne, VT, three grandchildren, Brad, Matt and Ali, and one great grandchild, Titus.  He is also survived by his sister Mary Ann Dion, his former son-in-law, Ed Chamberlain, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and brother and sister in laws.

In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his sister Nancy and his brother Ray.

A graveside committal service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 4th, for family and close friends, at the New Mount Calvary Cemetery on Plattsburgh Avenue  in Burlington.  A reception and celebration of his life will follow at his home in Shelburne.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shelburne Rescue, 154 Turtle Lane, Shelburne, Vermont 05482
